Winter in Champex is impressive. With the lake frozen solid and the snowy mountains seen from every vista it is a very special time of the year. La Breya is over 2000 metres high, so snow is virtually assured from January onwards.

Skiing and Snowboarding

Champex has some good skiing high up on La Breya. Snow is generally assured as it is at 2000 metres. For beginners there is a small nursery slope with a pommer lift.

For some refreshments or a spot of lunch whilst skiing you can visit the Café-restaurant de la Breya at the top of the ski lift which has fantastic panoramic views and a good menu or stop off at Relais du Val d'Arpette which is half way to the village with spectacular views of the mountains, a log fire and family cooked food, what more could you ask for.

Raquettes – snow shoe walks

There are three lovely racquette walks around Champex Lac.

Ski Fond - Cross country skiing

Each year a ski fond route is marked out around Champex with a section that goes right across Champex Lake. The course is fairly flat with some challenging downhill bends every now and then. The course caters for both the skating style and the classic style. You must purchase a ski fond permit from the tourist office before you set off.



Toboganning
There is an excellent toboggan run beside the Champex ski slope and into the village. You can take your toboggan up on the ski lift for a long and thrilling ride down.

Ice skating
There is a small ice skating rink beside the Belvedere Hotel. It is maintained through the winter and often floodlit with discos in the evenings during busier times. You will need to supply your own ice skates. Some years, if the weather conditions are right, the whole lake becomes a huge skating rink with scenes reminiscent of a Victorian Christmas card.
